Egypt draws "red lines" for Sudan conflict during Al-Burhan's visit

CAIRO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Egypt said on Thursday that preserving Sudan's unity and territorial integrity and safeguarding its resources and the capabilities of its people are key red lines.

The Egyptian presidency made the announcement in a press statement during the visit of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan to Cairo.

Egypt said it is following with grave concern the ongoing severe escalation and tension in Sudan, resulting in the "horrific massacres and flagrant violations" of the most basic human rights committed against Sudanese civilians, particularly in El Fasher.

It also affirmed that there are red lines that cannot be crossed or treated with any leniency, as this would directly undermine Egypt's national security, which is closely linked to Sudan's national security.

"This includes not allowing the secession of any part of Sudanese territory," the statement read, adding that Egypt reiterates its categorical rejection of the establishment or recognition of any parallel entities, which would jeopardize Sudan's unity and territorial integrity.

The statement also emphasized that preserving the institutions of the Sudanese state and preventing their undermining is another red line.

For his part, Al-Burhan expressed his appreciation for Egypt's continued support for Sudan and its efforts to help bring the current crisis to an end, noting that it reflects the deep fraternal relations between the two countries.

The two sides also agreed on the importance of intensifying efforts to provide support and assistance to the Sudanese people in light of the severe humanitarian conditions they are facing.

According to the statement, Egypt reiterated its full commitment to continuing to work within the framework of the Quartet -- the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt -- to reach a humanitarian truce that leads to a ceasefire, including the establishment of safe havens and humanitarian corridors to protect Sudanese civilians, in full coordination with Sudanese state institutions.

Sudan has been engulfed in a deadly conflict since April 15, 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced within the country and across its borders. ■
